Philips is strengthening its leadership in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with new artificial intelligence (AI) technologies designed to dramatically improve patient outcomes. The company will unveil these innovations at the 2025 European Congress of Radiology (ECR 2025) in Vienna, Austria (Feb. 26-Mar. 2).
SmartSpeed Precise: Faster, Sharper Images with AI
Central to Philips’ advancements is SmartSpeed Precise, powered by dual AI engines. This technology, built upon the company’s existing Compressed SENSE and SmartSpeed platforms, promises faster scan times and superior image quality. SmartSpeed Precise is designed to extend AI-driven efficiency across the entire Philips MR portfolio, including existing customer systems. Customers are already seeing significant benefits.
With SmartSpeed on our BlueSeal scanner, we have reduced exam times to less than 60 minutes per slot for a multi-parametric diagnostic quality whole-body exam, making it possible to scan 2 more patients per day.
— Wayne Picker, VP of Clinical Technology at Prenuvo, Inc.
Customers anticipate significant time savings and enhanced workflow improvements with Philips’ dual-AI SmartSpeed Precise. The technology offers exceptionally sharp and crisp images, which provides diagnostic confidence while allowing fast scans. The dual-AI SmartSpeed Precise solution is expected to set a new standard in clinical performance due to its ease of use, high image quality, and acceleration controlled by a single parameter. SmartSpeed Precise enables scans to be completed up to three times faster, significantly reducing scan times while maintaining exceptional image quality. At its core, a dual-AI engine delivers an 80% improvement in image sharpness, leading to clearer visualization and more accurate diagnoses.
MR Workspace R12: Streamlining Workflows
Philips is also introducing the latest release of its MR Workspace software, R12, which aims to streamline workflows further. This software features a ‘zero-click’ workflow, guiding the entire imaging process from scan initiation to report generation. By reducing manual intervention and optimizing efficiency, MR Workspace R12 empowers radiology departments to boost patient throughput and reduce backlogs.
One key innovation within MR Workspace R12 is the AI-powered SmartExam feature. This feature automates 80% of MR procedures, streamlining operations and standardizing imaging workflows. Another innovative aspect is Smart Reading, the industry’s first solution that integrates cloud-based, AI-driven quantitative reporting. Smart Reading leverages AI platforms like icobrain (icometrix) for neurology applications, including Alzheimer’s disease detection, and QP-Prostate (Quibim) for advanced prostate cancer diagnostics. These zero-click AI solutions support data-driven decision-making for clinicians.
Eco-Friendly MRI with BlueSeal

Perfectly aligned with this year’s ECR theme, ‘Planet Radiology’ – which emphasizes better patient care while protecting the planet – Philips is tackling two critical challenges: expanding global access to precision care and advancing environmental sustainability.
— Ioannis Panagiotelis, PhD, Global Business Leader MRI at Philips
Advancing Patient Outcomes
These advances reflect Philips’ ongoing commitment to improving diagnostic imaging, optimizing patient care, and promoting environmental sustainability. By integrating high-performance AI engines across its MRI portfolio, Philips aims to make high-quality imaging more accessible and efficient for healthcare providers and patients around the world. The company will be at #ECR2025 to discuss its innovations in detail.
