Putting Google Gemini’s Deep Research Tool to the Test: A User’s Guide

I’ve spent considerable time exploring the Deep Research tool within ChatGPT, generating extensive and detailed reports on a wide range of subjects. Naturally, I was intrigued when Google introduced a similarly named and functionally similar Deep Research feature in Gemini.

As the name suggests, Deep Research is Google Gemini’s AI-powered research assistant. Unlike the standard Gemini model, which provides direct search responses, Deep Research compiles comprehensive reports, complete with citations from analyzed sources, creating a neat and organized package for the user.

After experimenting with the free Gemini Deep Research tool, I wanted to share some of its potential uses and how it performs. It’s worth noting that I previously compared ChatGPT and Gemini’s Deep Research tools – here’s how Google’s free option stacks up against OpenAI’s paid offering.

    Making Sense of ‘Tenet’

We’ve all had that moment after watching a deliberately complex film or TV show, where bewilderment sets in, and you’re left pretending to understand what just happened. Sometimes, the creators themselves might not fully grasp their own work – a trait often associated with Christopher Nolan, especially evident in films like “Tenet.” If you’re looking to unravel the complexities, Gemini’s Deep Research can offer guidance.

I asked the AI to: “Explain the plot of ‘Tenet’ to someone who didn’t understand it all.”

The AI’s report, aptly titled “Unraveling the Temporal Knot,” was exactly what I needed. It broke down the movie’s intricate concepts, such as inverted entropy and temporal pincer movements, even providing a chart detailing the various characters, their objectives, and their methods. While I don’t necessarily enjoy the movie more now, the more confusing aspects of the film became much clearer.

    Navigating Difficult Conversations

I wanted to challenge Gemini by combining science with social interactions. While I’m fortunate enough to avoid such situations at Thanksgiving, I’ve heard countless tales of relatives turning holiday dinners into conversational minefields. I decided to see if Gemini could assist in diplomatically diffusing a particular example.

I explained to the AI that: “My extended family member insists the Earth is flat and I need a gentle but compelling explanation of why it’s not.”

Gemini provided a comprehensive and accessible explanation, covering all the scientific facts demonstrating the Earth’s spherical shape. It encompassed historical anecdotes about early explorers and simple observations that anyone can make. The AI even provided a chart outlining different forms of evidence and how they prove the Earth’s roundness. The response was crafted in a way that avoided any language that could be perceived as confrontational.

    Making Purchasing Decisions

I wanted to see how useful Gemini Deep Research could be for making purchasing decisions. Specifically, I asked the AI to “Research the best paint finishes for high-traffic areas that are easy to clean and durable.” The resulting report was thorough, though perhaps a little too detailed. The AI defined various types of high-traffic areas and explored the chemical differences that impact paint durability.

Ultimately, while the information was valuable, I would’ve preferred the concise answers from the standard Gemini model in this instance.

    Planning Road Trips

I’ve been planning a weekend road trip with my spouse. While guidebooks are readily available, I wanted something more tailored to our interests, so I decided to see if Gemini Deep Research could help.

I asked the AI to: “Help me plan a 4-day road trip through upstate New York, focusing on scenic hikes, cozy bed-and-breakfasts, and local food.”

Gemini generated a solid itinerary. It not only outlined daily activities, but it also included helpful lists and charts of places to stay, hikes, and restaurants. Additionally, it offered a packing list and driving tips, making the trip planning much more efficient. I appreciated the writing’s ‘local guide’ feel, with descriptions like “breathtaking hikes,” “authentic flavors of local cuisine,” and “rugged wilderness and picturesque mountain towns.”

Overall, while both Gemini and ChatGPT offer powerful research capabilities, the Deep Research feature provides a structured and in-depth approach, making it a valuable tool for various tasks. From tackling complicated movie plots to planning detailed road trips, the AI offers a unique and comprehensive way to gather information and insights.
