    Ryanair’s Cloud-Driven Transformation

Ryanair, Europe’s largest airline, operates 3,600 flights daily across over 40 countries. By embracing Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud technology, the airline has significantly improved efficiency and innovation. Ryanair’s business model focuses on maintaining low costs while enhancing customer satisfaction.

    Employee App Development

Using Amazon Bedrock, Ryanair created an employee app that has boosted workforce productivity and satisfaction. The app provides real-time visibility of schedules and flight details for over 15,000 staff members. According to Eddie Wilson, CEO of Ryanair, ‘We built our employee app on Amazon Bedrock, and it’s been hugely successful for Ryanair and our growth.’

    Enhanced Customer Experience

Ryanair has also streamlined customer service processes using Amazon Connect. The airline developed a chatbot with Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Lex, handling over 3 million conversations in multiple languages. This solution has liberated customer care agents from routine inquiries, allowing them to focus on issues requiring a human touch.

    Operational Efficiency

The airline has achieved significant operational improvements through AWS. By using AWS Storage Gateway, Ryanair’s systems engineers realized a 65% savings in backup costs and increased backup reliability. Additionally, the airline can now forecast demand for in-flight products using a custom-designed algorithm.

    Technological Innovation

Ryanair continues to innovate with AWS technology, from backup solutions to machine learning. The airline has collaborated with Manchester Airports Group (MAG) to develop an event-driven gate system using Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka (Amazon MSK), providing customers with live gate information.

As Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson stated, ‘The phrase that I use all the time is ‘scale through technology’. And we’ve been partnering with AWS on a lot of these.’ By leveraging AWS services, Ryanair is supporting better employee and customer experiences, running the business more efficiently, and preparing for future growth.

    Future Growth and Innovation

Ryanair’s partnership with AWS has been instrumental in driving its growth and innovation. With plans to continue leveraging cloud technology, the airline is poised to remain a leader in the aviation industry. As John Hurley, Chief Technology Officer at Ryanair, noted, ‘If we didn’t have the likes of AWS Lambda and AWS, and being fully in the cloud, we’d have been snookered.’
