SETU’s Women in Technology Event Inspires Future STEM Professionals
South East Technological University (SETU) hosted its fifth annual Women in Technology event in Waterford, aiming to empower young women and highlight career opportunities in the tech industry.

The event, which took place at the SETU Arena, drew over 1,100 female students from various counties, including Waterford, Wexford, Cork, Tipperary, and Kilkenny. The focus was on breaking down barriers and showcasing the diverse possibilities within technology.

Keynote speaker Kim McKenzie-Doyle from The Big Idea encouraged attendees to think creatively and connect with industry professionals to shape their futures. RTÉ broadcaster Zoe Ryan acted as the event’s MC.

Guest speakers Rebecca Troy of Sun Life and Zara Grunner of Security Risk Advisors shared their career experiences, highlighting the numerous opportunities available for women in technology.

Leading tech companies also participated, providing insights into various career paths. Sarah Adderley, Business Architect with Unum Ireland, led a successful “Stemming Ahead” workshop.

Amanda Freeman-Gater, Assistant Head of the Computing and Mathematics Department at SETU, emphasized the critical need for more women in technology. “The tech industry needs more female graduates, and studying the wide range of technological courses available at SETU opens pathways to dynamic careers,” she stated. She added, “Achieving gender equality in technology is essential—not just for the industry, but for society as a whole.”

The event included exhibitions, interactive technology demonstrations, and discussions led by female industry leaders. Attendees gained insights into the various third-level programs offered at SETU.
