Shield AI Closes $240M Funding Round, Valuation Hits $5.3 Billion
Shield AI, a defense technology startup, has announced a successful Series F-1 funding round, securing $240 million and achieving a valuation of $5.3 billion. This significant investment underscores the growing prominence of AI in defense and the potential of Shield AI’s technology.
The funding round saw participation from existing investors Andreessen Horowitz, U.S. Innovative Technology, and Washington Harbour. New investors included L3Harris Technologies Inc. and Hanwha Aerospace Co., both publicly traded defense contractors, indicating strong industry confidence in Shield AI’s trajectory. With this latest round, Shield AI’s total external funding now totals $1.3 billion.
Shield AI’s flagship product, Hivemind Enterprise, is designed to be the brain of autonomous defense systems, particularly drones. The platform’s software allows machines to operate independently, even without reliable communication links or GPS. The company reports successful testing of Hivemind Enterprise across various aircraft types.

Hivemind Enterprise comprises several key components. The first is EdgeOS, an operating system incorporating a specialized programming language for defining how autonomous machines exchange data. EdgeOS is designed for extensibility, allowing developers to add custom capabilities. Complementing EdgeOS is Pilot, a software offering providing prepackaged algorithms for use cases such as autonomous drone navigation. Shield AI provides developers with reference implementations to facilitate the use of Pilot.
Forge, the third component of Hivemind Enterprise, is engineered to simplify the development of autonomous machines. It includes simulation programs for rigorous testing of sensors, actuators, and other essential components. An analytics toolkit streamlines the review of technical data derived from these tests.
As Chief Technology Officer Nathan Michael noted, “Developing autonomy is both complex and costly. Hivemind Enterprise solves this widely known problem and enables the rapid and efficient proliferation of resilient, high-performance autonomy.”
To address the complexities of autonomous machine configuration, Shield AI’s platform incorporates verification and logging tools to help ensure correct setups and make correcting technical errors easier.
Shield AI also offers a range of hardware products, including the V-Bat drone, which takes off vertically and can fly for up to 13 hours. The company reports that its new capital will be used to enhance its existing software portfolio. According to TechCrunch, Shield AI is now the second most valuable defense technology startup, following Anduril Industries Inc., which is reportedly valued at $28 billion.
