In a groundbreaking development in Singapore’s retail landscape, local start-up Unistop has introduced Mr R, an automated retail solution that is redefining the convenience store experience. This innovative robotic kiosk, measuring 3m by 2m, is equipped with a robotic arm that grips and dispenses items using a magnet, effectively performing the tasks of a typical store clerk.
Key Features of Mr R
The Mr R kiosk boasts several features that set it apart from traditional vending machines. It can display up to 300 product types and store over 2,000 individual items, with separate compartments for freezer, chiller, and room temperature storage. This allows retailers to offer a wide variety of snacks, drinks, and daily essentials to customers.
Advanced Technology
Unistop’s chief executive officer, Irene Zhu, revealed that the company has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) system that can adjust kiosk promotions based on demographics and demand patterns. “Our intelligent AI system dynamically showcases on-screen promotions based on the time of day, day of the week, weather conditions, and available inventory, ensuring maximum relevance and engagement,” Ms Zhu explained.
Expansion Plans
Since receiving $95,000 in funding from tech accelerator programme Stellarate by Stellar Lifestyle in 2023, Unistop has expanded its operations from six locations to 10 sites islandwide. The company plans to open five more locations in Singapore’s rail network by the end of 2025, including Woodlands station on the Thomson-East Coast Line. By the end of 2027, it aims to have up to 20 kiosks set up at train stations.
Future Developments
Unistop is also working on upgrading Mr R’s robotic arm with sensor grippers capable of handling soft items such as boiled eggs, tofu, and sushi. The company is collaborating with Japanese robotics start-up Thinker, which has developed a sensor gripper robotic arm for this purpose. With its innovative solution, Unistop is poised to make a significant impact in the retail industry, not only in Singapore but also in overseas markets, particularly in developed countries facing manpower shortages and ageing populations.
As Unistop continues to push the boundaries of automated retail, its partnership with Stellar Lifestyle has provided valuable experience in navigating safety regulations governing retail spaces in MRT stations. This expertise will be crucial for the company’s future expansion into spaces with strict safety requirements, such as underground rail stations and airports.
