Skype to Shut Down After 21 Years, Microsoft Directs Users to Teams
Published March 1, 2025
Microsoft is ending support for Skype, the video-calling platform that once dominated the market. The company announced Friday that the service will be discontinued after 21 years, with a shutdown scheduled for Monday, May 5, 2025.
Skype, which was founded in the early 2000s, was acquired by Microsoft in 2011. However, the platform lost ground to competitors in the 2010s, leading Microsoft to make the decision to sunset the service.
Microsoft now hopes to move its users to its Teams application, which has seen increased adoption in recent years. The company has begun encouraging Skype users to switch platforms before the official shutdown date.
