Taiwan’s Economic Affairs Minister Kuo Jyh-huei met with Texas Governor Greg Abbott in Austin on Friday to discuss cooperation on semiconductor and artificial intelligence development, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).
The meeting followed up on a letter of intent signed between Kuo and Abbott in Taiwan in July 2024, which aimed at collaboration on commercial initiatives in semiconductors, electric vehicles, energy resilience, and technology innovation. The MOEA stated that Kuo and Abbott discussed how to implement this agreement by facilitating bilateral investment and closer partnerships.
During their meeting, Kuo informed Abbott of Taiwan’s plan to open a trade and investment center in Texas later this year. However, the MOEA did not provide further details on any specific agreements reached during their discussions.
In 2024, Taiwan was Texas’s fourth-largest import source. Texas has the second-largest economy among U.S. states. Bilateral trade between Taiwan and Texas reached US$25.59 billion in 2024, representing a 19.91% increase from the previous year.
