The tech industry is witnessing a significant shift towards AI-driven coding, with major players like Google, Microsoft, and Meta leading the charge. Recent statements from top executives reveal that AI is increasingly being used to write code, potentially transforming the landscape of software development.
Current State of AI in Coding
Google CEO Sundar Pichai revealed during the company’s earnings call that AI now writes “well over 30 per cent” of new code at Google, representing a 5% increase from the 25% reported in October 2024. Similarly, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella disclosed that about 30% of Microsoft’s code is currently written by AI, with some projects being “probably all written by software”.
Meta’s Ambitious AI Plans
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made even bolder predictions, stating that within the next 12 to 18 months, AI will likely write 100% of the code for Meta’s Llama projects. Zuckerberg emphasized that AI has already reached the capability of a mid-level engineer and is expected to surpass even top coders soon. “I think sometime in the next 12 to 18 months, we will reach the point where most of these codes that are going towards these efforts [Meta Llama projects] will be written by AI,” Zuckerberg said.
Industry-Wide Trends
These developments are part of a broader industry trend. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicted in March 2025 that AI would generate 90% of code within 3-6 months and 100% by the end of the year. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman noted that some companies are already having AI generate 50% of their code.
Impact on Employment
The increasing reliance on AI for coding tasks is also having implications for employment in the tech sector. Companies like Duolingo and Shopify have announced plans to replace human contractors with AI. Duolingo CEO Luis von Ahn stated that the company would “gradually stop using (human) contractors to do work that AI can handle.” Shopify CEO Tobias Lutke has made AI usage a baseline expectation, requiring teams to demonstrate why AI cannot complete a task before hiring new employees.

As AI continues to advance in coding capabilities, the tech industry is poised for significant changes in both development practices and employment dynamics. While tech leaders argue that AI will primarily assist human developers, the current trend suggests a more profound impact on coding jobs.
