Tech Layoff Wave Persists into 2025

The tech industry’s layoff wave shows no signs of abating as we head deeper into 2025. Last year was particularly brutal, with over 150,000 job cuts across 549 companies, according to the independent layoffs tracker Layoffs.fyi. The trend has continued into 2025, with more than 22,000 workers affected by reductions across the tech industry so far this year. February alone saw a staggering 16,084 job cuts.

Ongoing Layoffs in Major Tech Companies

The layoffs are widespread, affecting various sectors within the tech industry. Some notable examples include:

    • GM: Laid off 200 employees at its Factory Zero in Detroit and Hamtramck facility in Michigan, amid an EV slowdown.
    • Zopper: An India-based insurtech startup that has reportedly let go of around 100 employees since the start of 2025.
    • Turo: Will reduce its workforce by 150 positions following its decision not to proceed with its IPO.
    • GupShup: Laid off roughly 200 employees to improve efficiency and profitability.
    • Forto: Has eliminated 200 jobs, affecting around one-third of its employees.
    • Wicresoft: Will stop its operations in China, affecting around 2,000 employees.

Impact on Innovation and the Workforce

As businesses continue to embrace AI and automation, the tracker serves as a reminder of the human impact of layoffs — and what could be at stake with increased innovation. The list of known tech layoffs in 2025 is comprehensive and will be updated regularly.

    Recent Layoffs Across Various Companies

    Other significant layoffs include:

    • Northvolt: Laid off 2,800 employees (62% of its total staff) after filing for bankruptcy.
    • Block: Let go of 931 employees (around 8% of its workforce) as part of a reorganization.
    • Brightcove: Laid off 198 employees (about two-thirds of its U.S. workforce) after being acquired by Bending Spoons.
    • Siemens: Plans to let go of approximately 5,600 jobs globally in its automation and electric-vehicle charging businesses.
    • HelloFresh: Laid off 273 employees and closed its distribution center in Grand Prairie, Texas.
    • HPE: Will cut 2,500 employees (5% of its total staff) in response to its shares sliding 19% in the first fiscal quarter.

    Conclusion

The tech layoff wave of 2025 continues to affect thousands of employees across various companies worldwide. As the industry adapts to new technologies and economic challenges, the human impact of these layoffs remains a significant concern.
