Tech Layoffs in March 2025: Block, HelloFresh, HPE, TikTok, and Wayfair Cut Jobs
Several prominent tech companies have announced or are planning layoffs this month, continuing a trend observed in February. The most significant tech layoffs in March 2025 include those at Block, HelloFresh, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), TikTok, and Wayfair’s technology division. Here’s a breakdown:
Block Lays Off Over 900 Workers
Jack Dorsey’s fintech company, Block, has announced it will eliminate 931 positions. Block owns Cash App and Square, popular fintech apps and platforms. The layoffs affect roughly 8% of Block’s workforce.
Block’s announcement was made internally via an email from Dorsey to Block staff. The email was later leaked to TechCrunch. Dorsey provided three primary reasons for the workforce reduction:
- Eliminating employees on teams that are “off strategy.”
- Eliminating those with “below” or trending-below performance ratings.
- Flattening Block’s organizational hierarchy.
Dorsey specified the number of cuts for each reason: 391 employees due to strategy, 460 due to performance, and 80 managers due to hierarchy. Block also announced it would be closing many of its 748 open roles.
“We’re behind in our actions, and that’s not fair to the individuals who work here or the company. When we know, we should move, and there hasn’t been enough movement,” Dorsey stated in the email. “We need to move to help us meet and stay ahead of the transformational moment our industry is in.”
Block declined to comment when contacted by Fast Company.
HelloFresh Axing 273 Jobs in Texas
Online meal kit company HelloFresh will eliminate approximately 300 positions at a facility in Texas, as reported by GroceryDive. The company was required to file a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice in the state, which is required in some states for mass layoffs to provide advanced notice to workers and the local community.
According to HelloFresh’s WARN notice, 273 employees at its Grand Prairie, Texas, distribution center will lose their jobs on May 13. In an email to GroceryDive, a HelloFresh spokesperson confirmed these layoffs, stating that they are consolidating operations in the state to their Irving, Texas, location.
“As the meal kit market normalizes, we are now focused on diversifying our product offerings and driving profitable growth by optimizing our operational footprint,” the spokesperson said. “As a result, we have made the difficult decision to consolidate our operations in Texas.”
Hewlett Packard Enterprise Cuts 2,500 Jobs
In March, server maker Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) announced it would cut 2,500 jobs. This was announced during a recent earnings report and represents the largest known tech mass layoff this month.
As noted by CNBC, Hewlett Packard Enterprise aims to achieve $350 million in gross savings by fiscal year 2027. The 2,500 job cuts, expected over the next 18 months, are part of this plan. The layoffs represent about 5% of HPE’s workforce.
It’s important to note that Hewlett Packard Enterprise is a separate entity from consumer computer maker Hewlett Packard (HP). The two companies split almost a decade ago. However, these cuts follow HP’s job cuts from last month, where Hewlett-Packard announced it would cut 2,000 workers.
TikTok Could Cut 300 Jobs in Ireland
Social media giant TikTok is another tech company potentially facing job cuts. These cuts are specifically limited to operations in Ireland.
Ireland’s public broadcaster, Raidió Teilifís Éireann (RTÉ), reported that the country’s minister for enterprise, tourism, and employment understood that TikTok would cut approximately 300 jobs at its Dublin headquarters.
The job cuts are reportedly scheduled for April. TikTok employs nearly 3,000 people at its Dublin headquarters, so the cuts will impact about 10% of the workforce there.
Fast Company has reached out to TikTok for comment.
Wayfair Inc. Cutting Around 340 Technology Team Members
Wayfair, an e-commerce company specializing in home goods, revealed in a March 7 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) that it is reducing its workforce. According to the filing, Wayfair will let go of “approximately 340 members” of the Technology team.
“These changes reflect efforts to reshape, streamline and refocus the Company’s Technology organization after completing significant modernization and replatforming milestones,” Wayfair stated in the filing.
Wayfair reports employing over 12,000 people across North America and Europe.
Tech Layoffs Reach Nearly 25,000 in 2025 So Far
With the latest layoffs, along with others announced throughout March, total tech industry layoffs this year have reached 24,313, according to Layoffs.fyi, a site that tracks tech layoffs. The site says that 90 companies have announced tech-related layoffs in 2025.
For comparison, Layoffs.fyi reports just over 152,000 tech layoffs in 2024 and over 264,000 in 2023.
