The Myth of Perfect AI: Why AGI Will Inherit Human Flaws

The Risks of a Flaw-Free AGI

Attempts to eliminate these flaws are ongoing, but the outcomes are uncertain at best. One approach involves directly removing the flaws, a task that presents significant challenges. Identifying all flaws is difficult, and even if they can be identified, the resulting AI might suffer as a result. Another strategy is to mask the flaws, which carries its own set of risks.

Many believe that AGI itself will be able to solve the problem of its flaws. However, this assumption is built on conjecture; it remains unknown whether AGI will be capable of eradicating its inherent imperfections.

Should we be able to achieve a flaw-free AGI, the consequences are difficult to predict. AGI is likely to exhibit a logic-based, potentially destructive approach, causing significant harm to humanity. This is particularly true if some of the aspects that are considered ‘flaws’ are things like a sense of emotion or empathy, which in a hyper-logical AGI, would dictate the importance (or lack thereof) of humankind.

    The Enigma of ASI

As for ASI, its potential remains speculative at best. Unlike AGI, which is founded on human-level intelligence, ASI exists beyond our current comprehension. ASI may exhibit flaws or not, embracing them or even removing them entirely. If AGI becomes the stepping stone on the path to ASI, it is possible that any flaws in AGI will be incorporated into ASI.

    Towards Safer AI

We must continue to prioritize and expand the pursuit of aligning AI with human values. This effort involves designing and developing AI in a way that produces AGI that is aligned with human values or ensuring that the AGI itself recognizes those values.

Ultimately, we must recognize that assuming a perfect AGI free of flaws is a dangerous proposition. To quote Havelock Ellis, “The absence of flaw in beauty is itself a flaw.” The pursuit of artificial intelligence requires careful planning and foresight, taking into account potential negative consequences. A flaw-free AGI could be a flawed one indeed.
