The Russo Brothers, celebrated for directing films like ‘Avengers: Endgame’ and ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, have revealed insights into their latest project, the science fiction adventure film ‘The Electric State’, which has premiered on Netflix. The film, an adaptation of Simon Stålenhag’s 2018 graphic novel, is set in a post-apocalyptic world where a young woman searches for her brother with the help of a robot and a former soldier.

The Russo brothers, known for their blockbuster hits, have adapted the story by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. This film reunites them with the writers from ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame.’ The film has already generated considerable buzz, with the story’s themes of resilience and familial bonds resonating with audiences.
Speaking to The Times, the directors addressed the use of artificial intelligence in the film, which has sparked debate in Hollywood. The use of AI technology was primarily for vocal modulations. “There’s a lot of finger-pointing and hyperbole because people are afraid,” Joe Russo explained, addressing the common concerns. “They don’t understand. But ultimately you’ll see AI used more significantly. Also, AI is in its generative state now, where it has, as we call them, hallucinations. You can’t do mission-critical work with something that hallucinates. That is a reason self-driving cars haven’t taken over, or why AI surgery is not taking place worldwide. But in its generative state, AI is best suited towards creativity.”
The film features a star-studded cast, including Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt in leading roles, with supporting roles from Woody Harrelson, Ke Huy Quan, and Anthony Mackie. The directors discussed the casting choices and the film’s global relevance. “It is about the globalization of storytelling,” Anthony Russo stated, citing their move from comedy to global filmmaking. He added that the film’s focus on action-adventure allowed it to travel well around the world.

The film’s visual effects and motion capture techniques are expected to enhance the quality of the movie. Joe Russo noted the advancements that could be achieved in capturing film on set. While the critical reception has been mixed, audiences have shown more favorable responses. ‘The Electric State’ is currently streaming on Netflix, offering viewers a chance to experience this blend of action, sci-fi, and familial bonds.
