The Washington Post is seeking a highly experienced editor to spearhead a new department dedicated to business, science, health, technology, and climate – the significant forces, beyond government, that are currently shaping our world and future.

The newspaper emphasizes the importance of covering major breaking news stories. However, the ability to identify broader trends, explain complex technical topics, and understand how rapid technological advancements affect society and individuals is equally significant. The Post also places importance on the use of visual storytelling and alternative formats within the coverage area.
The ideal candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of the trends and concepts that define business, science, health, technology, and climate. They should have a proven history of producing insightful stories on these topics and be adept at recognizing emerging trends and issues. The position also requires the capacity to oversee ambitious investigative and enterprise journalism, including compelling narratives, and a strong understanding of integrated visual journalism. Furthermore, the ideal candidate will be a skilled manager with experience in developing talent and creating a supportive and inclusive work environment, and who can effectively lead teams while working across departments within the newsroom.
At a time of reinvention at The Post, an understanding of audience data, the use of applied data in editorial decision-making, digital innovations, and evolving storytelling trends is required. The publication is seeking an editor who is collaborative and capable of fostering a shared sense of purpose and teamwork across the newsroom.
Responsibilities:
- Produce leading-edge and insightful coverage of business, technology, science, health, and climate, with a clear understanding of the science and its impact.
- Contribute to developing and executing a comprehensive coverage strategy to generate high-profile and impactful storylines by guiding reporting and editing across the team.
- Lead and manage a large team of editors and reporters to produce first-class journalism, using a range of storytelling formats, including visually led approaches.
- Collaborate with Data and Analytics teams and the News Hub to ensure the appropriate story targets, presentation, and publishing.
- Cultivate a strong and supportive work culture that facilitates staff development and achievement.
- Ensure clear communication about expectations, mission, and growth, and manage a wide range of staffers.
Preferred Qualifications & Experience:
- Ten or more years of editing experience, with experience in technology or science journalism.
- Familiarity with a wide array of story platforms and formats, as well as knowledge of how to read and apply user data and metrics.
- The ability to bring clarity and insight to deeply complex subjects.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage a large staff with clarity and empathy.
- A skilled communicator who can articulate a galvanizing mission for the department.
- Prior experience managing a desk, including personnel and budgets, is preferred.
This position is based in the Washington, D.C., newsroom.

The salary range for this position is between $161,100.00 and $299,300.00 USD. The starting salary will be dependent on individual skills, experience, and qualifications. This position may also be eligible for a bonus or incentive program, which a member of the Talent Acquisition team would discuss during the interview process.
