UK Workers Optimistic but Overwhelmed by AI Advancements, Study Finds
A comprehensive study involving over 4,500 workers across nearly 30 different employment sectors in the UK has revealed a dual-edged impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on the workplace. While the majority of full-time professionals are optimistic about AI advancements, many also express feelings of being overwhelmed by the rapid development of the technology.

The research, commissioned by Henley Business School, found that 56% of full-time professionals are optimistic about AI, while 61% feel overwhelmed by its development speed. Prof Keiichi Nakata, Director of AI at The World of Work Institute at Henley Business School, noted that the study highlights a significant gap in workers’ ability to effectively utilize AI.
“This wide-scale study offers a valuable snapshot of how AI is being adopted across UK industries – and where support is still lacking,” Prof Nakata said. “Without in-house training, hands-on learning, and clear policies, we risk creating a workforce that’s willing to use AI but is not sure where to start.”
The study also revealed that three in five respondents would be more likely to use AI at work if proper training were available. However, nearly a quarter of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with their employers’ current level of support regarding AI.
Prof Nakata emphasized that AI “could be a transformative change in organisations across the UK,” simplifying complex tasks, eliminating mundane jobs, and allowing workers to focus on more meaningful work. “But that’s just the tip of the iceberg; it could prove to be a solution that not only helps businesses thrive but improves work satisfaction for employees,” he added.
The findings underscore the need for comprehensive training programs and clear AI policies in the workplace to harness the potential of AI while supporting workers through the transition.
