    Who is Vaniya Agrawal?

Vaniya Agrawal, an Indian-American software engineer, gained significant attention this year for disrupting two major Microsoft events. She protested against Microsoft’s cloud contracts with the Israeli government, raising concerns about the company’s involvement in what she termed as ‘genocide’ in Gaza.

    Background and Career

Agrawal studied Software Engineering at Arizona State University and began her career at Amazon in 2019. She later joined Microsoft in 2023 as a Software Engineer in the Artificial Intelligence division. Before entering the tech industry, she worked as a medical assistant, tea consultant, and pharmacy technician, and even ran a small business on Etsy selling handmade items.

    The Protests

The first disruption occurred during Microsoft’s 50th anniversary celebration in April, where Agrawal interrupted a panel featuring tech giants Bill Gates, Steve Ballmer, and Satya Nadella. She accused them of ‘celebrating on the blood’ of Palestinians, stating that 50,000 Palestinians in Gaza had been murdered using Microsoft technology. This incident led to her termination from Microsoft.

The second disruption happened at Microsoft’s annual developer conference, where Agrawal, along with another fired Microsoft employee, Hossam Nasr, protested against the company’s head of security for AI, Neta Haiby, regarding the cloud contracts with Israel’s Ministry of Defence.

    Aftermath and Activism

Following her termination, Agrawal took to social media platforms like Instagram and Twitter to share videos of her protests. She is also a member of the ‘No Azure for Apartheid’ group and continues to share posts related to the cause. Her actions have made her a notable figure in tech-sector activism.

    Reactions and Impact

Agrawal’s protests have sparked debates about the role of tech companies in geopolitical conflicts and the extent to which employees should voice their concerns during company events. The incident has raised questions about corporate responsibility and ethical considerations in the tech industry.

As the tech world watches, Agrawal’s story serves as a significant example of the intersection between technology, politics, and personal conviction. Her courage to speak out against corporate practices she disagrees with has ignited discussions that are likely to continue in the tech community.
