Virginia Tech to Celebrate Women in Data Science
Virginia Tech is set to host the Women in Data Science (WiDS) Blacksburg event on February 18-19. This event aims to boost the participation of women in data science and highlight successful women in the field. The event welcomes anyone interested in data science.
The WiDS Blacksburg event celebrates women in data science within the Virginia Tech community.
As the demand for data scientists continues to climb globally, Virginia Tech is showing its support by holding the annual WiDS Blacksburg event. The event is free to attend, with registration closing on February 14.
WiDS Blacksburg is part of the larger WiDS Worldwide initiative. The goal of WiDS Worldwide is to inspire, educate, and support women in data science. Their target is to increase female representation to 30 percent by 2030. Currently, women make up less than 20 percent of students in this area and hold fewer than 10 percent of decision-making positions.
The WiDS Blacksburg event will kick off with a networking mixer on Tuesday, February 18, from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Attendees can connect with students, faculty, and professionals at the Data and Decision Sciences Building. The agenda for Wednesday will include keynote speakers, a mentoring panel, and a student poster session, from 5:00 PM to 8:45 PM in 220 Classroom Building.
The opening keynote will be delivered by Neeta Eapen, a faculty member at Radford University. Her research focuses on areas like computational geometry and machine learning. The closing keynote will be from Bonnie Ghosh-Dastidar, the president of the American Statistical Association in 2024. Ghosh-Dastidar will talk about the influence of statistics in health policy.
