Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Xpeng is set to integrate its proprietary Turing AI chip into its semi-autonomous vehicles as early as this quarter. The company’s CEO, He Xiaopeng, revealed that the Turing chip boasts three times the computing power of Nvidia’s Drive Orin X currently used in Xpeng’s existing smart vehicles.

    Xpeng’s AI Chip Development

Xpeng’s Turing chip is designed to support Level 4 (L4) autonomous driving capabilities, representing a significant advancement in the company’s autonomous driving technology. The chip serves as the brain of Xpeng’s AI platform, known as Canghai, and is part of the company’s vision to develop comprehensive, in-house autonomous driving technology for mass-produced electric vehicles in China.

    Implementation Timeline

While He Xiaopeng didn’t disclose which specific Xpeng model will be the first to incorporate the new chip, he expressed optimism about the company’s future prospects. “Our chips will be seen in our cars all over the world in the future,” He told the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong. The executive also mentioned that the technology could potentially power other innovative products, such as flying cars and robots, being developed by Xpeng’s affiliated companies.

    Global Expansion Plans

He Xiaopeng highlighted the importance of regulatory approvals in various markets, stating, “We hope traffic rules in Hong Kong and other overseas markets will allow our cars with autonomous driving systems to take to the streets sometime next year.” This statement underscores Xpeng’s ambitions to expand its presence in global markets with its advanced autonomous driving technology.

The development of Xpeng’s proprietary AI chip is part of the company’s broader strategy to enhance its technological capabilities in the competitive Chinese electric vehicle market. By developing its own core technologies, Xpeng aims to strengthen its position among other EV manufacturers in China and potentially in international markets.
