Amazon’s self-driving vehicle unit, Zoox, has issued a recall for 258 vehicles because of a problem that could cause unexpected hard braking. The company announced the recall on Wednesday.
The recall affects vehicles fitted with automated driving system (ADS) software versions released before November 5, according to a report Zoox filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last week. Zoox, based in California, indicated that it has fixed the problem by updating the ADS software in the vehicles affected.
While Zoox has not publicly stated how many of its vehicles are currently in use, the company has significantly increased its testing over the past year.
Last June, the company announced plans to begin testing its autonomous vehicles in two new cities.
Self-driving vehicle companies are facing increased scrutiny after a 2023 incident in which a pedestrian was seriously injured by a Cruise vehicle, a self-driving car owned by General Motors. Waymo, a Google-owned company, recalled over 670 self-driving vehicles in the last year as well after one of their vehicles struck a wooden utility pole in Phoenix, Arizona.
